Direct Computer Resources CEO Joseph Buonomo Announces Industry/Government Program to Address Economics for Cyber Security

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 5, 2010) — The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Internet Security Alliance (ISA) released a new report and program designed to assist private sector organizations to better analyze the true economic costs of cyber incidents and a pragmatic program to prevent and mitigate these attacks at the National Press Club on March 31st.

The report was the result of a two-year long program involving more than 60 private sector entities and a dozen federal agencies. The joint industry government effort attempted to build upon the well known effects cyber attacks can have on enterprises and the fact that there are proven technologies, standards and practices which can address and investigate how to implement the required interventions.

Direct Computer Resources, Inc. (DCR) CEO and President, Joe Buonomo, who co-chaired the effort, said the program had plowed new ground in the fight to secure our nation’s information systems. "I think we all get what must be done and why it must be done. Now, we all know how to get it done and we understand that we are now at a critical tipping point that will probably define how the private sector and government will fare in the war against cyber crime, as well as how effective they will be in protecting the American people," Buonomo said.

The report, "The Financial Management of Cyber Risk" reveals that the silo-specific organizational structures existing in most organizations serves to mask the true costs of cyber events and undermines motivations for senior executives to allocate the necessary resources to protect their systems. It cites evidence that between half and two-thirds of American companies are currently defraying or reducing their investments in information security. It then lays out a detailed program enterprises can follow to better assess and manager their risks from cyber attacks.

Buonomo cited numerous endorsements from sources independent from the creation of the report which have already flooded in.

Melissa Hathaway, who wrote President Obama’s Cyber Space Policy Review called the new report, "An excellent guide for organizations to manage risk and exposure derived from digital dependence” and David Thompson, CIO of Symantec said the report was “An invaluable guide for every C-Level Executive."
